A Sweet Celebration of Love: The Story of Mother’s Day
Every year, on the second Sunday of May, people around the world pause to honor the women who raised them, nurtured them, and loved them unconditionally — their mothers. Mother’s Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it’s a heartfelt celebration of gratitude, legacy, and unconditional love.
Where It All Began
The roots of Mother’s Day trace back to ancient civilizations. The Greeks and Romans held festivals honoring mother goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. But the modern version of Mother’s Day began in the United States in the early 20th century.
In 1908, Anna Jarvis held the first official Mother’s Day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia, to honor her own mother’s wish to commemorate the sacrifices mothers make for their children. By 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it a national holiday.
Anna believed that mothers deserved a special day, not for commercial purposes, but for pure expressions of love and appreciation. Ironically, as the holiday became more commercialized, she later fought to remove it from the calendar altogether — but the tradition endured and blossomed into a cherished occasion worldwide.
